Freelancing

Since finishing at the university I've been weighing up my options. I thought about going back to bar work (its not quite off the cards yet) but decided to give myself a couple of weeks off before I decided anything for sure. During that time I've managed to get a fairly big client with regular work coming my way... not the most exciting stuff in the world it has to be said.

I'm designing DVD case templates for an online company who have some pretty big contracts with RFU (Rugby people) and Channel 4. Here are the first two designs I've done, like I say nothing hugely exciting but its work and what they want. The idea is that they are able to change the images and titles within a collection without having to do much extra work.

The images aren't finalised, the company need to source some better quality images.

And some more...

BCU

Right so it's just about over. not that anything I've done has been sent to print. Luck of the draw I guess that I got all the prospectuses that have been put on hold while they rewrite various courses. Typical of my luck, but also NOT MY FAULT.

Anyway, while I've been waiting for them to sort out the course information I've done more template stuff. All the content is made up, just based on lose band guidelines.
(sorry about the quality of these)

Muchuu Party: Coincidences and fun

I got an email last week from a band manager, John Mostyn, asking me if I wanted to be involved in the graphics for a new duo he was launching.

Coincidence number one: I had already heard the band, they are called Muchuu and do electro poppy stuff and were having a party in Malvern (where my mum lives).

Coincidence number two: I was at the pub with a couple of the tutors from uni and mentioned John had invited me to the party on Friday. They both went mad because one of them was going They had also taken the music to Hong Kong to get the students out there to work on the graphics.

Coincidence number three: when we arrived at the Custard Factory to get the minibus we bumped into another graduate from my year who was there to do the photography.

I'm still waiting for someone to jump out and yell "Gotcha".

The party itself was amazing, really lovely old building done out and fit Muchuu down to the ground. The audience was a mix of friends and family of the band, and people involved in the management. Here's a few pics I got before my camera died on me.

What I do when I'm bored

This is the result of having nothing to do... maybe I should have nothing to do more often... not that that will happen in the next 3 months, not that I'm complaining :D

Homebase

My final major project focused on creating a new brand identity for Homebase's grow your own range. I developed an identity that targeted young families and differentiated itself from the current market.

Fun Day flyers

I've designed this flyer for a university fund-raiser. It's based around the identity Sarah created for the fun day and graduation show and is designed to be given to first year students in halls. Lets hope it works.

Business cards

Business cards at the Fontastic exhibition! (photo stolen off Alex). The cards are Tetra-tetra flexigons, they each have four sides with examples of my work and the typeface.

This is my final type poster for the typeface Sanif, it is a typeface designed to be fun and relaxed. I also see it as a typeface school teachers could use instead of comic sans (which they seem to love for some reason). The poster is in a style that represents the type, its personal and and honest. I'm going to do light and display versions too. x

Its getting there, this is the light and medium versions. I've decided to develop a series of fonts based on a shape that combines classic and modern.

Type Project

We have been asked to design a typeface at uni, this is my basic idea (I still need to create the rest). I wanted it to be something that I would like on a personal level and would represent me, but also something that would work in different contexts. I haven't started playing with the size yet but its a starting point. Each letter will be broken down into parts and each part will have a personality and description.

AHHHHH... just re-read a brief we were given telling us to do a micro project so here's my micro project in an hour... taken from a D&AD- adding a new value to the HOMEBASE family with a range of 'Grow you own' seeds. I started by changing the lines on the original logo to soften them then added the plants and the type.

A poster about my view of design, and about how bad my last project really was. Its a statement I believe, but the colour and type (Barnbrooks' False Idol) is more about how I feel a lot of design ends up. A little bit negative I know but its my response to being made to do something I don't want to.

Valentines cards for the stall, for some reason the photo has flipped itself but you get the idea.

Valentines Stall Flyers

I've used the 181 logo the Vis Com branding team designed (http://1-8-1.blogspot.com/) to create a Valentines day logo that can be used on the fund-raising stall in uni next week. I tried to keep them as simple as possible but in keeping with the 181 branding so far. They are designed to be printed on coloured paper (cost effective).

Christmas lights

This is a piece I did for The Bond in Digbeth, its a complete breakdown of what we did from brief to realisation. Its still up now, go down and have a look if you like the look of it.

Ps. if you click on the image you can see the detail (it took me ages to work that out)
